What is PAT Testing?

Whether you’re a homeowner, landlord, or business owner, portable appliance testing is crucial for maintaining electrical safety. It’s considered to be an integral part of workplace safety and is often required by health and safety regulations.

PAT checks will thoroughly inspect and test your electrical appliances, to identify any potential issues that could lead to electric shocks or fires and involves several key steps:

Visual Inspection: The first step in PAT testing is a thorough visual inspection of the appliance, its plug, and the cable. This inspection looks for obvious signs of damage, wear and tear, or misuse.

Equipment PAT Testing: Depending on the appliance, various electrical tests may be performed using specialised PAT testing equipment. These tests can include an earth continuity test, insulation resistance test, polarity check and other functional checks.

Documentation and Records: After testing, each appliance is usually labelled with a sticker indicating it has been tested, the date of the test, and the next test due date. A detailed record of all tested appliances, including their condition and any actions taken, is maintained for compliance and safety audits.

Who can carry out PAT Testing?

While formal qualifications are not legally required to carry out PAT testing, it should be completed by someone who is competent and knowledgeable about the process, who understands electrical systems, the principles of portable appliance testing, and be able to interpret test results correctly.

At HomeCert we will only ever use a fully qualified electrician to carry out a PAT Test.

PAT testing helps to:

Prevent electrical accidents, such as fires and electric shocks

Ensure compliance with current safety standards and regulations

Identify and rectify potential hazards before they cause harm

Regular testing and maintenance of electrical items can extend their lifespan

That’s why we will only ever use a fully qualified electrician to complete your portable appliance testing.

How often does pat testing need to be done?

There’s no specific legal requirement for the frequency of PAT testing, there is suggested intervals for inspection and testing, based on a risk assessment, and depending on the type of equipment and its usage. For example:

High-risk environments: Such as construction sites or workshops, may require more frequent testing.
Low-risk environments: Such as offices or domestic settings, might have longer intervals between tests.

At HomeCert we recommend the following timescales when booking a PAT Test:

Domestic Homeowners

Every year or change of ownership

Domestic Landlords

Every year or change of tenants

Commercial Settings

Every 5 years or change of tenants

Public Houses and Bars

Landlord PAT Testing

Whilst it’s not a legal requirement in England and Wales, landlords are strongly advised to conduct portable appliance testing on any electrical appliances they provide to tenants, as part of their health and safety legal obligation, to ensure the electrical system and appliances are safe.

As part of our property certification services, we can help landlords with an EICR, EPC or Gas Safety Certificate and be able to complete any necessary repairs or improvements identified.
